The Syntax pane displays a colored syntax tree which graphically presents the relationships of all the words to the phrases, clauses and sentences which include them. The Holmstedt syntax database includes syntactical information for both the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and the Greek New Testament. The ETCBC syntax database and the Andersen-Forbes syntax database only cover the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). The Inscription syntax database only covers the Hebrew Inscriptions. The features of each database are outlined below:

Holmstedt Syntax:

• The verse reference is displayed at the start of each verse.
• The words from the text are displayed to the right of the column.
• Antecedents are indicated by a gray line to the right of the word list in the Syntax pane. Varying shades of gray are used to distinguish lines within the same sentence that may overlap.
• Colored lines link the words to the syntactical element, and the elements to their enclosing clauses and phrases.
• Matching colored letters identify the element.
• Gray lines separate the verses.
• Speech is indicated by an arc under the N or L. The number of arcs represent the nested level of speech.
• The N and L clauses have superscripts that identify the type of clause.
• Specifier and Exclamation items do not contribute to depth in searches, and are therefore drawn with parentheses.
• Compound forms such as Compound complements are indicated by a plus sign (+) sign beside the compound symbol, a dot on each branch, an ampersand (&) at the node, and a gray line on that branch of the syntax tree.
• Mouse over items in the Syntax pane to view more information in the Instant Details. For example, mousing over a Clause with a subtype displays the subtype information in the Instant Details.

ETCBC Syntax:

• The verse reference is displayed at the start of each verse.
• The words from the text are displayed to the right of the column.
• Colored lines link the words to the syntactical element, and the elements to their enclosing clauses and phrases.
• Matching colored letters identify the element.
• Gray lines separate the verses.
• Superscripts help identify subtypes of a common syntactic element.
• Mouse over items in the Syntax pane to view more information in the Instant Details. For example, mousing over a Clause with a subtype displays the subtype information in the Instant Details.
• Speech is indicated by an arc under the N (Narrative) element. The number of arcs represent the nested level of speech.

Andersen-Forbes Syntax:

• The verse reference is displayed at the start of each verse.
• The words from the text are displayed to the right of the column.
• Colored lines link the words to the syntactical element, and the elements to their enclosing clauses and phrases.
• Matching colored letters identify the element.
• Gray lines separate the verses.
• Superscripts help identify subtypes of a common syntactic element.
• Mouse over items in the Syntax pane to view more information in the Instant Details. For example, mousing over a Phrase with a subtype displays the subtype information in the Instant Details.

Inscription Syntax:

• The verse reference is displayed at the start of each verse.
• The words from the text are displayed to the right of the column.
• Colored lines link the words to the syntactical element, and the elements to their enclosing clauses and phrases.
• Matching colored letters identify the element.
• Gray lines separate the verses.
• Speech is indicated by an arc under the N. The number of arcs represent the nested level of speech.
• Superscripts help identify subtypes of a common syntactic element.
• Mouse over items in the Syntax pane to view more information in the Instant Details. For example, mousing over a Clause with a subtype displays the subtype information in the Instant Details.

• Resize the syntax pane by dragging the divider.
• To switch the pane to a horizontal position, on the Action menu select Move Down. Choose Move Up to return to a vertical position.
• Note that for Hebrew text the words start on the right, and for Greek text on the left.
• Click the font size buttons to adjust the size of the font for the words.

• Scroll the syntax pane in the same way as any other parallel pane.
• Press Ctrl to scroll only the selected pane.

For this feature to work properly, the GNT28-T (for New Testament cross highlighting) or HMT-W4 (for Old Testament cross highlighting) must be displayed.

If the correct tagged text is displayed in a parallel pane you can:

• Pass the cursor over the words in the syntax pane to highlight the same word in the tagged text.
• Pass the cursor over the tagged text to highlight each word in the syntax.
• Pass the cursor over the element characters to highlight the entire element in the parallel pane.

• Pass the cursor over element characters to display the full name and description of each element in the Instant Details.
• Pass the cursor over the tagged text to see the syntax element following the parsing and gloss Short definition of a word information (this can be turned off in the Instant Details area of the Preferences dialog box).
• Pass the cursor over a word in the Syntax pane to view the full grammatical information about that word.

Click inside the Syntax pane to make it the active The application, window, tab, or other screen element which is currently being used; sometimes called the "front" or "frontmost" screen element pane, then do one of the following to export to convert a file to another format for use in another application. the Syntax tree for use in another application.

• On the Edit menu, choose Copy Picture to copy the selected Syntax pane as an image.
• On the File menu, choose Save as Picture and then choose the desired image file.

• Right-click anywhere on the Syntax Tree and choose Set Syntax Tree Display from the shortcut menu Also known as a contextual menu, acessed by right-clicking (or pressing Ctrl+Click, Mac only) over a screen element that appears.
• Press Ctrl+T.
• On the Display menu, choose Set Syntax Tree Display.

Font size Pop-up Menu: Used to change the point size of the font used in the Syntax Tree display.

Background Color: Used to choose from a wide selection of background colors, or creating a custom color.

• Choose Custom Color: Opens the standard Macintosh dialog box offering several options for defining a color.
• Custom: Selects the currently defined custom color.

Text Color: Used to choose from a wide selection of background colors, or creating a custom color.

• Choose Custom Color: Opens the standard Macintosh dialog box offering several options for defining a color.
• Custom: Selects the currently defined custom color.

Show word gloss: Word glosses will be displayed in the Syntax Tree using respective lexical form The canonical (dictionary) form of a word glosses for the Holmstedt and ETCBC syntax.

Use As Default: Accepts the changes in the Set Syntax Tree Display dialog box as the default settings.
