Format and Edit Text of Notes

Accordance provides several tools for formatting and editing the text of notes stored in a User Notes file. You can:

The Edit Window for editing User Notes

Globally Set the Display of User Notes FilesGlobally Set the Display of User Notes Files

This procedure sets the display of all User Notes in all User Notes files, and overrides the "Set as Default" item if display of User Notes was set via the Set Notes Display dialog box (see procedure below for details).

  1. Do one of the following to open the Preferences dialog box.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  3. Press Ctrl+, (comma).
  4. In the left panel, click User Notes Display. The User Notes Display area is displayed.

  5. Select a Theme from the Theme pop-up menu. A preview of the selected Theme is shown in the Preview pane below.
  6. Select Standardize text display. If this item is not selected, the manual (local) formatting of the User Notes is applied to all notes in that file.
  7. Change the appearance of the User Notes content, search highlighting, links (hypertext) and background as desired. When you make changes here, the name of the Theme automatically changes to Custom.
  8. When done, click OK to save your changes. The new appearance is immediately applied to all notes in your User Notes files.

Note

If you set the appearance of a User Notes file using the Set Notes Display dialog box, the settings made here override those settings. You can, however, return to that file and apply the settings for that file again via the Set Notes Display dialog box. That procedure is described below.

Set the Display of a Single User Notes FileSet the Display of a Single User Notes File

  1. Place the cursor in any activeClosed The application, window, tab, or other screen element which is currently being used; sometimes called the "front" or "frontmost" screen element User Notes pane.
  2. Do one of the following to open the Set Notes Display dialog box:
  3. On the Pane bar Action menu (Action pop-up menu: Provides additional options ), choose Set Notes Display.
  4. On the Display menu, choose Set Notes Display.
  5. Press Ctrl+T .
  6. Right-click and choose Set Notes Display.

    The Set Notes Display dialog box appears with the name of the User Notes file. For example, if your file was named "My User Notes" the dialog box label would read "Set Notes Display for My User Notes."

  7. Select a Theme from the Theme pop-up menu. A preview of the selected Theme is shown in the Preview pane, below.
  8. Customize Theme/Hide Customization button: Click this button to hide/show items for further customizing your theme.
  9. Standardize Fonts and Styles: If this item is not selected, the manual (local) formatting of the User Notes is applied to all notes in that file.
  10. Change the appearance of the User Notes content, search highlighting, links (hypertext) and background as desired. When you make changes here, the name of the Theme automatically changes to Custom.
  11. Click Use as Default to have your changes applied ONLY to this User Notes file. If you do not click this button, when you click OK your changes are applied only to the current User Notes file until it is closed. The next time the same file opens, the default appearance (based on settings made in the User Notes Display area of the Preferences dialog box) is applied.

Use the Edit Window toolbar to quickly edit the text of a note in a variety of ways.

10 Insert Picture button Click to insert a picture in the note. A window opens for choosing a picture on your computer. A prompt also appears for selecting the size of the picture in the note.

Change Input LanguageChange Input Language

The Language pop-up menu is used to specify which language to enter when typing normal characters. You can use it to quickly switch between languages. If Greek or Hebrew is selected, your default Greek and Hebrew keyboard layouts for Accordance are accessed, but the content you type will be in Unicode.

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window.
  2. On the Edit window toolbar, choose the desired language from the Language pop-up menu. The new language is used for the specific note until you change the input language again.

Create a Scripture Link: DetailsCreate a Scripture Link: Details

A verse reference can be turned into a Scripture link. When the note is viewed in a User Notes tab, the link behaves as any other Scripture link. Scripture links can be created one at a time, or all at once using the Auto-Link button. When entering a reference, be sure to use standard Accordance abbreviations and numbers, as when doing a verse search.

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window.
  2. Select the verse reference in the Edit window and click Link (Link button on the Edit Window toolbar). The Add or Edit Link dialog box opens.

  3. Proceed as follows in the Add or Edit Link dialog box.
  4. Select the Scripture/Text item.
  5. Link box: Edit the link, as necessary.
  6. Display box: Edit the appearance of the linked text, if necessary.
  7. Click OK. The dialog box closes.
  8. Click Update at the bottom of the Edit window to save your changes. Any open User Notes panes/tabs are immediately updated.

Hint

You can view the Alternate Text for a Scripture link in the Instant Details by pressing Ctrl while resting the cursor over the link.

Link to a WebsiteLink to a Website

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window.
  2. Select the word(s) to which you want to add a Web link.
  3. Click Link (Link button on the Edit Window toolbar). The Add or Edit Link dialog box opens.

  4. Select the Web URL item.
  5. In the Link box, type or paste in the URL to the website.
  6. The URL (link) must include http:// to be recognized by Accordance. If you forget to add it, it is added automatically for you.
  7. A URL (link) such as http://www.accordancebible.com/ opens the browser to that address.
  8. The link mailto:support@accordancebible.com creates a new mail message to that address.
  9. Accordance distinguishes these links from a Scripture link by the colon without adjacent numbers. Spaces are not allowed within the link.
  10. When done, click OK. The Add or Edit Link dialog box closes and the link is applied to the selected text.
  11. Click Update at the bottom of the Edit window to save your changes.

Link to Files on Your ComputerLink to Files on Your Computer

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window.
  2. Select the word(s) to which you want to add a file link.
  3. Click Link (Link button on the Edit Window toolbar). The Add or Edit Link dialog box opens.

  4. Select the File item and click Choose File. A system window opens for navigating to and selecting the desired file.

    You can also type the link in manually. A link to a file on the hard disk or another attached disk or drive is similar to a link in a browser such as: file:///Users/myname/Documents/pics/temple.tiff.

  5. Click OK in the Add or Edit Link dialog box. The Add or Edit Link dialog box closes.
  6. Click Update at the bottom of the Edit window to save your changes.

Hints

These links may be used to open other resources in Accordance when teaching.

Press Ctrl and click on a link to open the link in a new workspace.

Link to Another Accordance ResourceLink to Another Accordance Resource

You can link to a predefined search in any resourceClosed Any Bible text, or other single tool that can be read in Accordance, including reference texts and articles; may also be referred to as content or module installed with Accordance. Clicking the link displays the search results in a new tab.

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window.
  2. Select the word(s) to which you want to add a link to an Accordance resource.
  3. Click Link (Link button on the Edit Window toolbar). The Add or Edit Link dialog box opens.

  4. Select the Resource Link item. Items appear for selecting the Tool and content you want to link to.

    These items are used to select the resource search parameters.

    Proceed as follows:

  5. Searched Tool pop-up menu: Click and select the desired resource.
  6. Field pop-up menu: Click and select the desired field. Field options vary depending on the Tool selected.
  7. Search box: Enter the word(s) to be searched for.
  8. Click OK in the Add or Edit Link dialog box. The Add or Edit Link dialog box closes.
  9. Click Update at the bottom of the Edit window to save your changes.

Open the Add or Edit Link dialog box: Press Ctrl+L.

Create automatic Scripture links: Press Shift+Ctrl+L.

Automatically remove all links in the note: Alt+ Shift+ Ctrl+L.

View the alternate Text for Scripture links in the Instant Details: Press Ctrl while resting the cursor over the link.

Create Multiple LinksCreate Multiple Links

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window.
  2. Type the User Note with as many links as desired, including Scripture references, URLs, etc.
  3. When done, click Auto Link(Auto-link button on the Edit Window toolbar) on the Edit window toolbar. All valid links become Scripture, Web, File, or Tool links.

Delete LinksDelete Links

  1. Place the cursor on the link in the Edit Window and click Link (Link button on the Edit Window toolbar). The Add or Edit Link dialog box opens.

  2. Click Remove Link. The Add or Edit Link dialog box closes.
  3. Click Update at the bottom of the Edit window to save your changes. The link is deleted.

To delete all links:

Press Shift+Alt+Ctrl+L.

Insert a PictureInsert a Picture

You can insert or copy pictures into a User Note. Supported file types are .jpg, .png, .tiff, and .bmp. Once inserted and saved, clicking on the thumbnail opens the picture in a Picture popover.

  1. Open a User Notes Edit window and place the cursor at the location where you want to insert a picture.
  2. From the Edit Window toolbar click Insert Picture (Insert a Picture on the Edit Window Toolbar; used to add a photo to your User Note or User Tool). A system window opens for navigating to and selecting the desired picture.
  3. Navigate to and select the desired picture and click Open. If the picture is more than 100KB in size, the Resize Picture dialog box opens.

  4. If it appears, in the Resize Picture dialog box, choose one of the following items: 
  5. Small, Medium, Large, or Actual Size. Smaller sizes are recommended if you are accessing your notes from a mobile device frequently.
  6. Remember my choice for this sessionClosed The arrangement of screen elements when working with Accordance: Select if you want the same item automatically selected each time you insert a picture during the current Accordance session.
  7. Click OK in the Add or Edit Link dialog box. The Add or Edit Link dialog box closes.
  8. Click Update at the bottom of the Edit window to save your changes.

Hint

You can also just paste a picture into the User Note. In this case, the Resize Picture dialog box will also appear if the picture is quite large.

Find and ReplaceFind and Replace

You can search for and replace a word or phrase in the Edit window.

  1. On the Search menu, choose Find/Replace. The Find/Replace dialog box opens.
  2. Enter the terms you want to find and replace, and select any other applicable options, then click Find.

Modify an Entire User Notes FileModify an Entire User Notes File

You can make font style changes to an entire User Note file:

  1. Open a User Notes File. The selected User Note file is opened in a new tab.
  2. On the Selection menu, choose Modify an Entire User Notes File. The Modify an Entire User Notes File dialog box opens.
  3. Set all text fonts to: Select a font to replace all non-original language text.
  4. Set all text sizes to: Select to normalize all font sizes in the selected User Note.
  5. Increase/decrease all text sizes by: Select to increase or decrease relative font sizes.
  6. Set all text colors to: Select to change all User Note fonts to selected color.
  7. Remove all text styling: Select to make plain text.
  8. Remove all superscript styles: Select to remove superscript styling.
  9. Remove all subscript styles: Select to remove subscript styling.
  10. Select the items to be modified, then click OK.

Delete a NoteDelete a Note

Notes are also deleted from within the Edit window.

  1. Open the note in an Edit window.
  2. Select and delete the entire note.
  3. In the Edit window, click Update. The note is deleted from the User Notes file and the page icon for that verse disappears.
