The Table of Contents (TOC) and Tool Pane

The Tool pane displays the content of the Tool moduleClosed Any Bible text, or other single tool that can be read in Accordance, including reference texts and articles; may also be referred to as content or resource or the search results. Tool content is usually divided into sections, articles, and sub-articles; however, these divisions may not be readily apparent, depending on how "hits" are displayed.

The Table of Contents (opened by clicking the TOC button, Click to open or close the Tool Browser) is used to see the context of the content in the Tool pane. Note that the context is displayed in a hierarchical structure, similar to a table of contents. This makes it easy to navigate to any other article or subarticle in the tool. However, the TOC can be used for much more than simple navigation—it can be used to further refine a search within the tool.

An example of a module with a complex structure is shown below. Note that while the Navigation bar displays the article in which the paragraph appears, the TOC lets you see the article in the full context of the Tool module.

  • Open or close the TOC by clicking the TOC button (Click to open or close the Tool Browser) on the Pane bar.
  • Open or close subsections of the TOC by clicking the disclosure triangle ( or) next to the article or subarticle titles.
  • Holding down Opt+ while opening the TOC or a section in the TOC, automatically opens and highlights the relevant subsections displayed in the Tool pane.
  • The cursor changes to a black X in the left margin of the TOC when an expanded section can be closed. Simply click while the X cursor is visible to close that section.
  • As you scroll through the Tool pane, the TOC automatically scrolls and highlights the article or subarticle that corresponds to the paragraph at the top of the Tool pane.
  • Click a title in the TOC to open that article in the Tool pane. When an article is displayed in this manner, the All Text item is automatically selected for the Show Text As item in the Action pop-up menu (Action pop-up menu: Provides additional options ).

The TOC can be customized in three ways:

  • Fonts: You can change the default font size in the TOC (Preferences dialog box, Appearance area).
  • Auto-Size: The width of the TOC can be set to automatically resize if the text extends beyond the right edge of the pane. When the Suppress tool browser auto-sizing item is not selected in the Appearance area of the Preferences dialog box, the TOC temporarily widens when the cursor passes over it, for easy reading of the longer entries and the hierarchy. The TOC returns to its normal width once the cursor moves out of its boundaries.
  • Manual Resize: You can manually resize the TOC. Drag the bar between the TOC and Tool pane to the desired location.

    When auto-size is activeClosed The application, window, tab, or other screen element which is currently being used; sometimes called the "front" or "frontmost" screen element, altering either the wide or narrow state of the TOC automatically resets the width of the other state proportionally.

Set a Display Range via the Table of ContentsSet a Display Range via the Table of Contents

By setting a display range in the TOC, you can further refine a search to a very specific article or subarticle in a tool (for example, for printing purposes).

To set a display range:

  1. Press Opt+ and move the cursor over a title in the TOC. The cursor changes to a red arrow ().

  2. Click the title you want the search range to apply to. A red bar appears next to the selected titles.

    All subarticles within a selected article are also marked with a red bar.

  3. If desired, select additional articles. Press Shift+Opt+ and then click the additional articles. Red bars appear next to the additionally selected titles.
  4. If desired, remove the selections as follows.
  5. Press Opt+ and move the cursor to the left margin of the TOC, next to a title. The cursor changes to a red "x" ().

  6. Click anywhere on the left margin of the TOC. All selections are removed.

    You can also set the range via the TOC shortcut menuClosed Also known as a contextual menu, acessed by right-clicking (or pressing Ctrl+Click, Mac only) over a screen element. Right-click anywhere in the TOC. Available options are: Expand Levels, Select Range, Add To Range, and Clear Ranges

  1. Choose Show Text As>Articles from the Action pop-up menu (Action pop-up menu: Provides additional options ) on the Pane bar.
  2. Use Opt+Click to select the desired titles in the TOC. The desired articles are marked with a red sidebar in the left margin of the TOC.
  3. Press Enter or Return in the Search Entry area. Only the selected articles are displayed in the Tool pane.

    You can now print the articles displayed in the Tool pane.

Right-click on an item and choose Print to print all the content of the selected item.

Right-click on an item and choose Select Text to select all the content of the selected item; you can then copy and paste the selection as desired.
